Meet Shakisha Downey, the administrator turned outreach coordinator at Halifax Learning Centre, who knows firsthand the challenges that many marginalized youth face on the road to academic success. As a recent Sociology grad from Dalhousie University, Shakisha was hired with the support of the Graduate to Opportunity Program, which provides salary contributions of up to 35% to Nova Scotia employers who commit to hiring recent grads for full-time jobs. Shakisha is now setting up her peers for success by using her skills, experience and insight to help strengthen the literacy development of young people in HRM.
