Summer Student Position

Outreach Worker – Pictou County Roots for Youth

Organization’s Mandate

We operate a Drop-In Centre and Shelter for youth aged 16-24 in New Glasgow, NS. We also offer various youth-development programs. Our mandate is “To offer support (be there through life changes) for the youth of our community to reach their dreams.” Our website is www.pictoucountyrootsforyouth.com .

Hourly Wage Rate: $ 11.00

Number of Weeks: 12

Number of Hours per Week Required: 35.00

Anticipated Start Date: 01 June 2018.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The summer student will be responsible for the following:

  1. To enable Roots House to be open during the day in the summer months to youth who are temporary residents of Roots House. They will ensure that the rules of the house are being respected and enforced.
  2. To conduct outreach activities in the community under the guidance of the Director to educate youth in our community about the services available at PC Roots for Youth. (Drop In Services, Temporary Accommodation, Youth Development programs, ad hoc workshops, etc.)
  3. To assist the Event Coordinator with the planning and implementation of fundraising events that benefit Roots for Youth.

Supervision and Mentoring Plans

The student will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, on site at Roots House in New Glasgow. Additional oversight will be provided by the Youth Worker. There are three employees in our organization and 20 volunteers. Thus all mentorship and supervision will be provided by the Director and Youth Worker.

Health and Safety Practices in the Workplace:

We will put the student through the same orientation that we give to all of our volunteers, which includes health and safety practices to consider while at Roots House, as well as a safety course delivered by a member of our Board, who is an RCMP officer. We work with young people from tough realities, and the safety of our staff and volunteers is something that we take very seriously. It would be a benefit if the student had a food handler’s course already, but if not, we’ll attempt to source this training for the summer student while they are with us.
